How to play Shooting Fish in a Barrel

Shooting Fish in a Barrel looks easy: there is a barrel full of fish and you have 60 seconds. The fish disagree. They swim away from your cursor, scatter when you fire nearby, and hide behind each other.

Controls

Mouse or touch: click or tap a fish to shoot it.
You have six shots, then you reload. A reload takes half a second plus a tenth for each missing round, so an empty magazine takes 1.1 seconds.

The fish

Minnow: small and fast. Worth 25 points before the multiplier.
Trout: bigger and slower. Worth 15 points before the multiplier.
Bass: the big one. It takes 3 hits, with 10 points for each hit and a 30-point bonus for the one that finishes it.
Goldfish: the one with the halo. Shooting it costs you 25 points and 3 seconds, and it breaks your combo.

Combos

Every 3 hits in a row raises your multiplier by one level, up to six times. A miss breaks the chain. Your points for each hit are multiplied by the current level, so a long chain is where the big scores come from.

Ranks

Your total score gives you a rank: Fish: 1, You: 0 to start, then Mildly Damp at 250, Fishy Business at 700, Barrel Sharpshooter at 1300 and Legend of the Barrel at 2200.

Tips

Protect the combo. A missed shot costs more than a shot, because it resets your multiplier. Only fire when you are confident of the hit.
Keep the cursor still. The fish swim away from it, so waving it around drives them out of reach.
One miss spooks the neighbours. A shot startles fish within a certain distance, which makes the next shot harder.
Look before you shoot. Fish in front hide the ones behind them.
Count your shots. Six go quickly, and you cannot fire during a reload, so wild shooting costs you twice: once for the miss and once for the pause.
